Trellis Scarf – the beginning

with 3 comments

Over the weekend, I just jumped in and started my trellis scarf. I cast on about 20 times because I either couldn’t count or couldn’t do it loose enough. I eventually got going and have finished most of the first border.

Then it is time to start the main lace section – a 16 row repeat. For a 60 inch scarf, it needs to be repeated 23 times. I think I will make it a bit longer, but we’ll see when I get to 60 inches – I’ll probably be ready to be done :) The thing I’m a little worried about is the 7 into 5 cluster. Has anyone ever done anything like this:

K7tog and leave sts on needle, yo, knit the same 7 sts tog again and leave them on needle, yo, knit the 7 sts tog once more and slip sts from needle.

Yikes!!!!! We’ll see how it goes.

  1. I can’t believe you’re subjecting yourself to this kind of masochism! I’ve started several lace projects only to give up after too many times of losing count and messing up. Good luck!

It looks great so far. :)

  2. First let me say that your edging looks fabulous!!! About the cluster – although I haven’t done this particulat stitch before, I have done similar ones. The trick for me is to keep my tension even. If you knit too loose you get really big loops, and if you knit too tight it gets all bunchy and it’s hard to knit the next row. Sometimes it’s easier to knit lace with metal needles because it helps the stiches slide more easily. Course that alpaca can be a bit slippery – it knits up beautifully, though!

  3. Thanks for the tip, Kira. The pattern also suggests trying a crochet hook to get the new stitch though the seven – I’ll probably give that a try, too.
